At the end of the nineteenth century, the Martians attacked the Earth with metallic machines what fallen from the sky making a large hole in the ground. A terrible sticky big creatures (size as a bear) with tentacles went out from the cylinders of the metallic machines and flew thought the air in front of a lot of people. Most of the scary population of London was moving to the north in a hurry, because a metallic engine shining machines higher than many houses were attacking the places with flame fires killing and burning the people, the horses, houses, and the woods; there were fire, smoke from everywhere, the houses, the churches, and everything were destroyed too. The soldiers and some scientists tried to understand and control the situation, but they couldn't.
Most of the story takes place around the town of Woking, a town to the south-west of London.
